  1. A Blockchain-Based Decentralized Data Storage and Access Framework for PingER

The blockchain is an innovative technology which opened doors to new applications for solving numerous problems in distributed environments. In this study, we design a blockchain-based data storage and access framework for PingER (worldwide end-to-end Internet performance measurement project) to remove its total dependence on a centralized repository. We use the permissioned blockchain and Distributed Hash Tables (DHT) for this purpose. In the proposed framework, metadata of the files are stored on the blockchain whereas the actual files are stored off-chain through DHT at multiple locations using a peer-to-peer network of PingER Monitoring Agents. Lastly, this will provide decentralized storage, more » distributed processing, and efficient lookup capabilities to the PingER framework.« less
  2. Storages Are Not Forever

Not unlike the concern over diminishing fossil fuel, information technology is bringing its own share of future worries. Here, we chose to look closely into one concern in this paper, namely the limited amount of data storage. By a simple extrapolatory analysis, it is shown that we are on the way to exhaust our storage capacity in less than two centuries with current technology and no recycling. This can be taken as a note of caution to expand research initiative in several directions: firstly, bringing forth innovative data analysis techniques to represent, learn, and aggregate useful knowledge while filtering outmore » noise from data; secondly, tap onto the interplay between storage and computing to minimize storage allocation; thirdly, explore ingenious solutions to expand storage capacity. Throughout this paper, we delve deeper into the state-of-the-art research and also put forth novel propositions in all of the abovementioned directions, including space- and time-efficient data representation, intelligent data aggregation, in-memory computing, extra-terrestrial storage, and data curation. The main aim of this paper is to raise awareness on the storage limitation we are about to face if current technology is adopted and the storage utilization growth rate persists. In the manuscript, we propose some storage solutions and a better utilization of storage capacity through a global DIKW hierarchy.« less
  3. Correlation analysis on real-time tab-delimited network monitoring data

End-End performance monitoring in the Internet, also called PingER is a part of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s research project. It was created to answer the growing need to monitor network both to analyze current performance and to designate resources to optimize execution between research centers, and the universities and institutes co-operating on present and future operations. The monitoring support reflects the broad geographical area of the collaborations and requires a comprehensive number of research and financial channels. The data architecture retrieval and methodology of the interpretation have emerged over numerous years. Analyzing this data is the main challenge due tomore » its high volume. Finally, by using correlation analysis, we can make crucial conclusions about how the network data affects the performance of the hosts and how it depends from countries to countries.« less
